File Transer Protocol (FTP)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to transfer files between computers on a network. We can use FTP to exchange files between computers or to access software archives on the internet. We can download a FTP client such as Cyberduck (for Mac) to transfer files, or use a web browser (such as IE or Firefox) to connect to FTP addresses, this method sounds more convenient; however, its often slower, less reliable, security issue, and have fewer features than a dedicated FTP client.

TASK
Using FTP client Cyberduck to connect to recall.curtin.edu.au. Use anonymous login.

Download the file readme.txt and get the answer "CAPITALIZATION MATTERS!".

Telnet: Good and Bad

The first time I used internet was using http, never heard about Telnet. Of course, the main reason is I am a Mac user. After researching, Telnet is a very old and very simple communications protocol that giving a command-line interface to a computer across the network. It was developed in 1969, one of the first Internet tools, under DOS based.

Task A: download the software PuTTY on PC and start exploring.

Type in "library.deakin.edu.au" and choose telnet. A DOS screen pops up and connects to Deakin University library database. Search by Author with the name Bennahum. Then shows up this screen.

Choose print and type in my email address, then receive an email from Deakin Uni Lib about Bennahum's book list.

Task B: Telnet to towel.blinkenlights.nl

Amazing!! Animation with DOS?! However there is no control buttons. And its only black and white, pretty dull.

Conclusion:
This telnet program does is simply sends text that is typed in, and displays whatever it gets back. The good thing of Telnet is simple and easy to use. However, Telnet's simplicity also is its weakness. One of the biggest problems with Telnet is that whatever text you type in is sent across the network essentially the same. This is a problem primarily because when people need to log into the remote computer in order to use it with telnet. It means that their user name and password are both sent across the network in plain text. It would be the worst thing for the users.
